Tank Mixing with Enlist® Herbicides in Program Approach Helps You Maximize Weed Control in Enlist E3® Soybeans

March 09, 2023 7:00 a.m.

As you get ready to plant your Enlist E3® soybeans this year, ensure you are prepared to successfully tackle weeds with a program approach that includes multiple modes of action in your preplant and preemergence applications and your tank mix with Enlist One® and Enlist Duo® herbicides.

With Enlist E3 soybeans, farmers are able to use Enlist Duo or Enlist One as the cornerstone of a program approach to control weeds all season long. Enlist Duo combines 2,4-D choline with glyphosate in a convenient herbicide blend for neighbor-friendly weed control. Enlist One is a straight-goods 2,4-D choline that also delivers exceptional weed control designed to land and stay on target plus offers additional tank-mix flexibility.

A program approach for Enlist E3 soybeans includes a burndown application, followed by a soil residual preemergence herbicide with multiple modes of action. Then incorporate multiple modes of action in a timely postemergence application of Enlist herbicides and qualified tank mix partners through the R1 growth stage. Remember there are no calendar cutoff dates for Enlist herbicides.

When developing that program approach for your Enlist E3 soybeans, be sure to consider your weed pressure, weather conditions and agronomic situation when assessing which Enlist herbicide and tank-mix partners work best. Layering qualified residual herbicides as part of a tank mix with Enlist herbicides can lessen weed resistance from developing as well as deliver season-long control of tough broadleaf weeds and grasses.

For example with pigweed, waterhemp and kochia, farmers should consider a tank mix of Enlist One herbicide plus a glufosinate such as Liberty® herbicide, the preferred glufosinate tank-mix partner with Enlist One, to give two effective modes of action in fighting these hard-to-control weeds. For heavy grass pressure and glyphosate-susceptible broadleaves, farmers can either use Enlist Duo herbicide or Enlist One and glyphosate.

Key best practices to follow for optimizing weed control from Enlist herbicides and tank-mix partners include:

- Maximize carrier volume to improve coverage. Use 15 GPA or more water carrier in applications of Enlist One herbicide and qualified glyphosate tank-mix partner. Use up to 20 GPA water carrier in applications of Enlist One and qualified glufosinate tank-mix partner.

- Always use the qualified nozzles and recommended pressures for Enlist herbicide applications. Recommended nozzle pressures are usually in the 50+ psi range to ensure a consistent droplet size in the application.

- Ensure that you are using recommended additives to the tank-mixes with Enlist herbicides. The addition of COC/MSO products can help the control especially under conditions of larger size weeds and drier weather conditions.

- Apply when weeds are small – 3-6 inches tall.

Refer to all individual product labels, supplemental labeling and fact sheets for all products in the tank mixture, and observe all precautions and limitations on the labels, including application timing restrictions, soil restrictions, minimum plant-back interval and rotational guidelines. Use according to the most restrictive precautionary statements for each product in the tank mixture.

Then in addition to herbicides, farmers can also tank mix Enlist herbicides with qualified insecticides, fungicides, micronutrients and adjuvants for additional crop protection. A full list of qualified tank mix products is available at EnlistTankMix.com.

Enlist® Herbicide tank-mix sequence procedures

When tank-mixing with Enlist® herbicides, be sure to only use tank-mix partners found on EnlistTankMix.com and follow these guidelines:

  • Start with a clean sprayer before mixing a load with Enlist One or Enlist Duo herbicides
  • Begin with a half-full tank of water carrier
  • Begin agitation and continue mixing process
  • Add products one at time in the following order:
    1. AMS/water-conditioning agents
    2. Preslurry water-soluble packets
    3. Wettable powders/dry flowables
    4. Compatibility agents
    5. Liquid flowables
    6. Capsule suspension (CS) or suspension emulsion (SE)
    7. Emulsifiable concentrate (EC)
    8. Soluble liquids (SL) like glyphosate products, glufosinate products and Enlist herbicides
    9. Crop oil concentrate (COC), methylated seed oil (MSO), nonionic surfactant (NIS) other adjuvants
  • Top off with water carrier
