“Residuals have become a big part of our chemical programs, trying to control waterhemp and marestail, which is our big one,” says Rob Shaffer, Shaffer Farms. “Maverick has done a really good job of controlling those, that’s for sure.”

Maverick offers application flexibility on corn up to 18-inches tall or the V6 growth stage, meaning Mother Nature doesn’t get the final say on weed control timing.

For Shaffer, applying Maverick when preplant conditions were especially dry didn’t give weeds the upper hand. A half-inch of timely rain was the recharge his farm needed. “Maverick kicked in and we had clean fields because of the residual.”

With a broad application window from preemergence to the V6 growth stage and flexibility to work with different trait systems, Maverick gives growers options well into the season.

“As you start to see weed breaks, regardless of the preemergence product used, applying Maverick at the 14-ounce rate will give you residual control through canopy,” says Will Griffin, row crop segment manager for Valent U.S.A.

With three effective modes of action, Maverick provides control of large-seeded broadleaves, small-seeded broadleaves and annual grasses. Group 4, Group 27 and Group 15 modes of action combine for truly broad-spectrum residual control- and with a low use rate.

In trials, Maverick applied at the 32 fluid ounces per acre rate with 3/4-pound atrazine per acre outperformed Acuron® applied at the recommended 3 quarts – 96 fluid ounces per acre – rate. In another trial, Maverick provided equivalent control to the 3 quarts rate of Acuron and greater control than Resicore® applied at the recommended 2.75 quarts per acre rate, without the addition of atrazine.

Maverick can be tank mixed with other products, including atrazine, providing good ease of use for growers and custom applicators,” says Griffin. “Having the three modes of action makes Maverick an especially good fit for managing herbicide resistance, as well.”

Maverick is labeled for use in field corn, seed corn, silage and yellow popcorn. Application rates vary from 18-32 fluid ounces per acre for preemergence applications in coarse, medium and fine soils. Postemergence applications are recommended at 14 fluid ounces per acre.
