Understanding copper deficiency in wheat

Copper is an essential micronutrient for growers' wheat crop, playing a crucial role in various physiological processes.
Jun 4, 2024

Despite its importance, copper deficiency in wheat is a common issue that can severely impact crop yield and quality.

Causes of copper deficiency

Copper deficiency in wheat is primarily caused by soil factors. Sandy soils, high in organic matter, often have low copper availability. This deficiency can be exacerbated by factors such as high pH levels, excessive phosphorus fertilization, and continuous cropping without replenishing soil nutrients. Additionally, regions with heavy rainfall can experience leaching, further depleting copper levels in the soil.

Symptoms of copper deficiency

Recognizing the symptoms of copper deficiency in wheat is crucial for timely intervention. Common symptoms include:

  1. Leaf Discoloration: Young leaves may exhibit a pale green or yellow color due to impaired chlorophyll production.
  2. Deformed Leaves: Leaves may become twisted or curled, and their tips can appear necrotic.
  3. Delayed Maturity: Wheat plants may exhibit stunted growth and delayed maturity, affecting the overall development and yield.
  4. Poor Grain Formation: Copper-deficient wheat often produces fewer and smaller grains, directly impacting crop yield and quality.

It's essential to distinguish these symptoms from those caused by other nutrient deficiencies or diseases to apply the correct remedial measures.

Moxon CU logo

Moxon Cu is a foliar applied ortho-ortho EDDHA chelated source of nitrogen and copper. It contains a low salt, highly efficient source of nitrogen derived from liquid urea. Moxon Cu enhances rapid nitrogen absorption while aiding in the uptake and translocation of other critical nutrients.

Moxon Cu can be custom blended with other primary, secondary and micronutrients as well as many crop protection chemicals.

Always read and follow label instructions.
